Best R&B/Soul Albums 2009:Top RnB CDs – 2009 is over musically and it is time for our annual Best R&B/Soul Albums list/post.The year was quite good RnB music wise with the return of Maxwell, the confirmation of Chrisette Michele and the discovery of Melanie Fiona. The likes of R.Kelly,Mary J. Blige and Mariah Carey also proved that they still had it.Here are the Best R&B/Soul Albums for 2009 in no particular order.

Mary J. Blige – Stronger With Each Tear : Solid album from the queen, not her best but still ahead of the game.
R.Kelly – Untitled : Sex,sex did I say sex? Good album but lacked cohesion, with that element it could have been great.
Maxwell – Black Summer’s Night : One classic song “Pretty Wings” and the Neo-soul messiah is back where he belongs, although this was not his best record.
Chrisette Michele – Epiphany : Wow,classic in the making,Chrisette Michele is the present and future of R&B/Soul music.
Brian McKnight – Evolution of a Man : He reminded us that he was still a force to be reckoned with when it comes to love songs.
Joss Stone – Colour Me Free! : The title speaks for itself,Stone is amazing.Raw talent!!!
Eric Roberson – Music Fan First : The leader of the underground soul movement put out a very mature album in 2009,although it was not his best,he still made the list.
Melanie Fiona – The Bridge : Melanie took the music world by surprise and it was a pretty good one.
Ledisi – Turn Me Loose : Ledisi put out a very solid effort this year.
Chico DeBarge – Addiction : Like Maxwell,I am happy that he is back.

Here are some noteworthy releases that did not make the list.

Keri Hilson – In a Perfect World… : In a Perfect World…she would be selling more records because she is very talented.
Trey Songz – Ready : Decent effort but there is room for maturation.
Amerie – In Love & War : Decent album,it is hard not to like her.
The-Dream – Love Vs. Money : According to him he had the best R&B album of 2009,but for me it lacked depth to deserve that title.
Alicia Keys – The Element Of Freedom : Alicia went all pop on us,and I am not sure it was a good idea.Nonetheless the LP was better than 95 percent of the other releases.
Rihanna – Rated R : Nice effort.
Mariah Carey – Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel : Entertaining album but we all know that Mariah can do better than that.
Whitney Houston – I Look to You : Comeback of the year,a decent mixture of Gospel and pop.

What are your favorite R&B albums for 2009?

You give many of these albums a slight compliment and then contradict it with a big “but.”

Yeah, I’ll be running out to buy them. Right away.

  4. Leo says:

Rihanna, Alicia, Trey, Robin Thicke, and Maxwell killed it this year with their albums. It makes me proud to be black

where is pleasure p???I THINK THAT IT ‘S THE BEST ALBUM OF THIS YEAR

  6. Ryan says:

I loved the new Trey Songz and Chris Brown. R. Kelly is up there to. And like domenico said, that Pleasure P. album is solid.

  7. MrFullSwing says:

No Ryan Leslie? He had two great albums out this year. Transition took a little more time to grow on me but is probably the album I have listen to most in the last 12 months.

  8. MrsNewBooty says:

You’re missing Ryan Leslie. He had a good album.

Not a fan of Keri Hilson so I could care less about her.

Alicia’s album is really good too.

You’re also missing Prince. He definitely s/b on the list.

  9. djsamflip says:

Your missing Laura Izibor’s album “Let The Truth Be Told” an amazing album one of the best this year, saw her on tour with Maxwell and at the Essence festival!

  10. Mr.SoloDolo says:

Whoever made this list is stupid. How do you say Alicia Keys is not better then most of the albums released this year?

  11. ingrid says:

What about Joe’s album Signature? Hands down this album should have been up for a Grammy. I don’t understand how true singers never get their shine. smh.
