India Arie slam lady gaga beyonce

India Arie Slams Lady Gaga Telephone Video ‘Socially Irresponsible’ – India Arie is not really happy with Lady Gaga and Beyonce ‘Telephone’ music video. Arie believes it is irresponsible and that the pop stars have gone too far with the amount of sexuality used in the video. So she took to her Twitter to state her displeasure saying:

Don’t be offended this is all MY opinion… Am I the only one who thinks the “telephone” video is going a bit too far?
I’m not referring to the abstract nature of the video … I’m talking about the IMAGERY – the unspoken back story, the language the message

I agree gaga is being her image .. I dig her creative mind But still … Thers a such thing as socially irresponsible… I’m just sayin.

Its not long before somebody does a straight NAKED video. Not like Alanis morrisette “thank you india” like NAKED dancing around. LOLhahaha

Let’s be CLEAR! I know it gaga M.O. – I don’t live under a rock. And I get that a lot of work put into it. I’m talking social responsability

The soul singer added:

There’s an artist ever 10 years who pushes the envelope … but its bout to fall off the Table. When is it too far?
I respect the creative mind but disagree with the “choices” as a dish meant to be served for mass consumption ..
Crazy to me that the Dark, underbelly, s shock at all cost thing is a TREND like asymetrical hair and big shoulder jackets .Slippery slope!
Love life. 6 year old at the store old her mom say who’s your favorite singer

This girl is CUTE! She says “india arie” “aaaaaand?” Her mom promots her she says “beyonce “aaaand” her mom says again “Lady gaga”

Mom turns to me and says “but I won’t let her watch the “telephone” lolhahahaahha! Haha! Tooo Funny.

Do you think that Arie is trying to stay relevant by making these controversial comments or do you think she is right there is too much nudity in the clip?

why doesn’t she focus on her own career instead of portraying so much envy towards gaga!

    • jiji says:

I dont think its envy. Lady GAGA has no talent except for being crazy. She should have just been an actress since she loves putting on a show and not really singing. India Arie told the truth. We like to think that kids wouldnt look up to Beyonce and Lady Gaga but they do. So they need to watch what they do and how they do it!!

      • Rihanna what? says:

IM GONNA HAVE TO AGREE WIT YOU ON LADY GAGA BEING AN ACTRESS LOL @JIJI

      • Don says:

“We like to think kids wouldn’t look up to Gaga and Beyonce” for WHAT???
Role model??? Role model for what?? LIFE?
I’m pretty sure they aren’t that cracked, or that SMART!! They would love her dancing, but what else do they know?
If at all, tennagers may be the ones that look up to them as role models in life. But again, these teens live in a society, hence they would look at people in their immediate surroundings to learn how to live in a society, not Gaga or Beyonce that they would see rarely at a concert or on TV.
Above all, Gaga and Beyonce are not teachers, they are entertainers, they gained popularity because of they public who support them, they provide us with what we want! And quite evidently, this is what our society is asking for!!!
So we can’t ask Gaga or Beyonce to change for the minority of us who believe that they are a bad influence on the children. All we can do is enthrust that responsibilty on our society.
So once again, what so ever India Arie does, no significant change is gonna take place!!!

        • lillies2010 says:

You must be living under a bubble is you don’t see the social effect of children and teenages being exposed to consistent sexual imagery. Whether its in the form of a Beyonce or Gaga video, or just direct internet porn.

Our appetite for inappropriate sexual imagery has been so complacent that we don’t even realize the horrifying effects on our children. These ‘entertainers’ make money from us that we are stakeholders in their careers like it or not, our children do look up to them and I wouldn’t want me child seeing those videos.

Like it or not these entertainers need to take their head out of their egos and once in a while consider the impact of their actions.

India Arie as someone in their industry is a great person to voice these concerns.

    • donita says:

      where do u live at

    • truth&reality says:

I think the point that india.arie is trying to make is that Lady Gaga success is based upon the lowest common denominator for the blueprint of today’s successfully commercial artist- which is sex sells! What makes Lady Gaga so successful in the bloom of her career is her edgy tunes and equally, edgy fashion and presentation. Ironically, her controversy style appears to be the artist real persona which is fine. But what arie is pointing out is when does the “over-the-top” articulation of her music and style becomes over-the-top? How far will she go with her theatrics to top the last thing she did? What’s next after the “Telephone” video? A “snuff” film?

Moreover, there is a general rule to mass-marketing a product to the masses. Either a product can survive on its own constitution and or it is heavily promoted. Lady Gaga falls in the latter. The problem which arie points to is that there is a cost to her mass appeal as it relates to women – that cost is the dignity of ALL women. Lady Gaga re-enforces the male ideology that women are more or less, a commodity whose broader use delineates them to a sexual utensil.

The only solace in these damaging cultural situation is that artist like these tend to burnout quickly. Lady Gaga will certainly go the way of the Britney Spears and such.

For the girl who never heard of Indie.Arie, if you are currently an avid Gaga fan, Arie wouldn’t fall in your solar system let alone on your radar. They are two different talents in such that Arie is the truly gifted artist.

    • lillies2010 says:

Its not about Gaga, use your head, its about social responsibility and I’m sure you’re not stupid so you’ll be able to know why you question was though.

  2. patrickt says:

SOMEONE IS JEALOUS!!!!!! WHAT AN UGLY PERSON!

    • Charlene says:

      Nothing in her statement reflected

India Arie, is a very sucessful and talented artist. Her success has come from her pure talent and hard work, not by taking off her clothes.

She is a true ARTIST . . Lady Gaga is a gimmick.

  3. Guest101 says:

India Arie needs to shut the hell up just becuase her “average girl in the video” didnt make it anywhere….being boring and old fashioned is OUT OF HERE! GET WITH THE BIGGER PICTURE India! we are in 2010! not 1990!

    • jiji says:

being a WHORE is not how you make it to the top. India is for the always striving to help others what about lady gaga! Its crazy how you people follow those that are wrong and beat up on those that are right. GO India for standing your ground and speaking the TRUTH!! GET a LIFE and get out of BEYONCE’ and LADY GAGA’s BUTT

  4. lapadite92 says:

A commercially irrelevant artist/band criticizing Lady Gaga again…
    what else is new? LOL

People should be used to this by now.

    • jiji says:

Commercially Irrelevant??? What maked GAGA relevant her must doesnt say much and she doesnt do much for others Yall are sad, I hope you all dont have any children because if you do I feel sorry for them

  5. TAJ MONET says:

Who is Indie Arie and why would her opinion matter to anyone. There is a beer commercial where the wheat is rolling around in the sand with the bottle of beer creating a new beer. There is another commercial where a bunny is getting with a jar of peanut butter to make peanut butter eggs. That commercial is for kids? Ga Ga is not main stream they don’t play her video on the cartoon network or on primetime.

    • Peta says:

She IS mainstream though. Cartoon Network is whats not mainstream. All the radio networks carry telephone and all the music and entertainment channels carry the video.

  6. Concerned says:

I have to agree with Indie. Sorry, Beyonce. It was a fun video and could have been enjoyed by EVERYONE if it weren’t two seconds short of a porno video. I thought it odd that they were more concerned with censorship of brand name than see-through apron. C’mon people, that’s just gross! She’s practically anorexic! Eat a sandwich!

  7. CrackisWack says:

I agree with India. Society has no standards anymore. This is a really disgusting world we live in.

  8. L says:

I would think people would be more concerned with the mass murder in the video. Who give a crap what they had on they killed 20 or so patrons in the resteraunt.

    • Nikki says:

OK. Everyone is focusing on the sex but the violence was way more IN YOUR FACE! That goes to show how inundated with violence we are that we’ve became desensitized to it.

  9. lave says:

wtf. how about the killing and violence? the nudity is tasteless and not very artistically done… but maybe all the poisoning is a little lame? i don’t see the creative ‘mind’ or understand the message at all myself.

  10. Tinisha says:

I totally agree with India Arie, she is a beautiful and strong woman and doesn’t need to take her clother off and act like a whore just to sell records. Society has completely gone mad. Anyone can take their clothes off and spread their legs its just nasty to keep showing it. I have lost complete respect for beyonce. She was great in destiny’s child and the beginning of her solo career but now there’s a competition to see who can act the more sluttiest. I respect Alicia keys, she is a beautiful woman who is so talented. I onyl hope she doesnt follow other celebs and strip off just to sell records.

  11. SALMa says:

i respect this lady soo much, because they need to know the truth. gaga is alro reaching a younger market n she is a role model to young girls. the video is just not needed

  12. Peta says:

I’m amazed at the cries of OMGJEALOUSY!!!!11!1 from the people replying here. It’s surprising to me that shots of somebody’s VAGINA aren’t considered taking a music video too far. Up until this point I have utterly loved her artistic side displayed in her outfits and choreography but the elements portrayed here are severely discomfiting.

There are plenty of interesting points about the video. The outfits, when she actually wears them, are inventive as ever – in particular the sunglasses created from lit cigarettes.

I just have to question the decision, like most other people out there. I don’t think that India Arie is suggesting her opinion is more important than anyone elses, but she’s probably wondering like a lot of people, why Lady Gaga wants to be remembered as “that singer who showed her vagina”.

  13. Christie says:

Hahahaha people you are the ones who make it “Socially Irresponsible”. Get overrrr it. If you take it serious then there is something wrong with you. Why do people want everything to be the same. She is the first white artist in a long time to finally branch out of that stupid teeny bopper sh*t. She represents a lot, why can’t people just respect that and be over it?

  14. Lebohang says:

The concept of the “Telephone” video stays true to the and misical brand nature of Lady Gaga and be reminded that Lady Gaga featured in Beyonce’s video “Videophone” in the “Beyonce-like” nature, so people must not say that Beyonce messes up the video(as I have read on other blogs and sites). This latest video is highly sexual and never in video-making history has a mass-murder occured, so one must question what is being implied “kill him if he eats all your honey”? India Arie is a Grammy-winnig artist, who has also performed at the 46664 concert and has done a wonderfull collaborations with Akon, so labelling her “irrelevant” is absolute rubbish.

  15. Marcos says:

India Arie is talented and an amazing singer, but she should stick to her genre and fans. She has no right to attack Lady Gaga. If you do not like Lady Gaga, then don’t watch her video (which is pure art — if you don’t understand art, then don’t even bother having an opinion about the video) or let your kids watch it. If something is “socially irresponsible” then it is YOUR responsibility to control what goes in to your house. Gaga put out a masterpiece for her FANS to enjoy; if you are not a fan, you have no business watching it. Oh, and, watch your spelling, India Arie!

    • moi says:

art? im really amazed how many people use the term art when they talk about ENTERTAINMENT. nobody is attacking lady gaga or trying to assassinate her, especially not someone as polite and nice as India Arie. lady gaga is putting herself out there, and that means she’s exposed to criticism. i dont see the big deal here.

  16. gaga nation says:

Screw off India.Arie! Who the heck are you??? STOP BEING JEALOUS. I know gaga is way better than you but dang, there’s no need to hate.

    GAGA NATION!

  17. gaga nation says:

By the way, india.ari music S*CKS!!! MS KEYS IS WAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY BETTER!

  18. Nikki says:

I think everyone is missing the point here. You want to call India a hater and jelous because she expressed her opinion. And contrary to the ignorant that posted that, “She’s just mad because her average girl didn’t go anywhere”, you people are talking about the same thing she is. Maybe she didn’t make it as a household name like GaGa BECAUSE she kept her clothes on! Music has been regressing for a long time into pure carnal topics. Loves songs don’t allude to lovemaking; now it gets down right graphic! If you look at femal recording artists the more skin they show, the more albums sold. Beyounce didn’t ‘Blow-up’ until DC became of age and could start showing more skin.

    • Rihanna what? says:

INDIA ARIE JUST MAD BECAUSE SHE NOT GETTING ATTENTION AND THATS WHY SHE ON TWITTER HATING! SHE MAD BECAUSE SHE NOT SEXY. EVEN IF SHE DID TAKE HER CLOTHS OFF SHE WOULND BE SEXY. ALICA KEYS GETTING MORE ATTENTION THAN HER AND SHE KEEPS HER CLOTHS ON. TWITTER IS FOR HATING a$s CLEBS.

    • KingDavid says:

U should e-mail me (gardner.david23@yahoo.$$m) I like ur point of view, it’s beautiful.

  19. HALF AMAZIN says:

India Arie has a point. The video is a hideous gimmick. I expected more art and less a$s.

  20. bethB says:

Gag…a is just another porn star.

  21. curt curt says:

its funny how every thinks this is an act of jealousy…an how OHHH DONT COME AT LADY GAGA AN BEYONCE LIKE THAT… ok first off…its her OWN opinion! everyone has the right to SPEAK THIR MIND! Personallly i do feel she was right….the video was pretty inapproiate…i mean with all the perverted things that were taking place there?! an ohhh…how to do a MASS MURDER!!! just what the world needs to see today right?! ummmmmmm NO!! at least when India Arie was big, her music had an STILL has a message…an it is touching and encourageing young lives to go out an make a difference…Gaga on the other hand…makes music that is very shallow…an has no real message! So for the people that think India is HATING!!!!????? MAYBE U SHOULD GO CHECK THE DEF OF HATING AGAIN….CUZ THAT WAS NOT IT…IF ANYTHING SHES PASSING ON SOME WORDS OF WISDOM…I MEAN SINCE SHE HAS BEEN IN THE GAME LONGER THAN THOSE RISING DIVAS HAVE BEEN!!! (((((( I MEAN DANG))))!!!

  22. uk london says:

lady gaga, no TALENT SO SHE HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER WAY TO MAKE MONEY. SO MISS IRIE KNOW WHAT SHE SAYIN.PEOPLE ONLY IF U ARE MOM U WILL DEEPLY UNDERSTAND

  23. Chantelle says:

I think i’ll have to agree with India. Personally i couldn’t care less about what people put in their videos, they have the freedom to do as they please… BUT i’m an adult, and we all have a social responsibility towards younger people. I think a video like that is clearly gonna have a different effect on a say an 11 year old, than a 19 year old.

  24. gbg sweden says:

She is just jealous, she should mind her own business & get a laid or something…ugly M.F!!

  25. moi says:

Wow, just wow. Now better go back to listening your Lady Gaga, don’t bother to express your opinion cause it takes some more IQ for that, you’re not even civilized enough to talk without insults and swearing. You obviously don’t respect anything or anyone that has a piece of mind, India have never used swear words, just expressed her opinion in a polite way. It’s much easier to be noticed with shaking your a$s with no clothes on , that’s why you love these pop entertainers so much. Cause you relate to their stupidity and shallowness. The only difference between you and them is, they are clowns with the money, you are clowns without any money, you pay them to be clowns. Now I appreciate India even more. She doesn’t need to strip for us to know her name. I’m not even from US and her music is pretty relevant to me. TALENT IS STILL RECOGNIZED AND APPRECIATED, just cause it’s not out there butt-naked making out with Lady Gaga, doesn’t mean we don’t see it or like it!!!!!!

  26. moi says:

And oh, when Lady Gaga comes up with a song that doesn’t get boring and old after a month, then you may say she’s an ‘artist’. Until then, she’s just another teeny kitsch, an entertainer, so deal with it, true musicians won’t show much respect for that! It’s so hard to be different and unique in a nice way ain’t it? Think about it.

  27. Stephen says:

If you don’t like it; don’t watch it.

    Simple.

Why does everyone feel the need to force their ideals on everyone else? Like India has the best “socially acceptable” compass that everyone should be aligned to? You have an opinion; fine. But don’t be so arrogant as to call something you don’t agree with, and which hurts no one at all, “socially irresponsible”.

    My 2 cents.

    • hmmmmm says:

ok now my 2 cents…HER OPINION she did not say that you all have to agree with her she said that this is her opinion all u guys hear is that she does nt like the video and thinks that it is, by her standards, socially irresponsible.
everyone has their own standards so deal with it she is speaking from her point of view and her standards

    • KMart says:

Disgusting w/r/t the sexual overtones and the violence. As an artist, I’m glad there is freedom of expression. Unfortunately, some people’s schtick is to push the edges of decency and free speech — not their creative abilities.

    • truth&reality says:

Simple is right! You are simple-minded!

Is that your answer to every ill that plagues our society or any other society?

“If you don’t like it, don’t listen..close you ears and eyes.”

Great harm has been done to humanity with that 2 year-old child’s logic.

Maybe moron should be replace with “Stephen” in the dictionary!

      Good day to you, sir!

  28. krisb says:

I don’t think she’s envious of anyone’s career. As a parent, I think she makes a completely valid point. I realize it is my responsibility to be the first line of defense and to filter the things my children watch on television or on listen to on the radio. But as a 34 year old mother of two, mainstream has GONE TOO FAR. Thank goodness I and my husband are our children’s role models but there are so many who look up to the Lady Gaga’s of the entertainment industry and don’t have any voice of reason to explain that is just that-entertainment. It makes me wonder-”Have they gone too far or am I just getting old” LOL! India.arie, I’m still a fan.

  29. CarloS says:

SHES TOTALLY RIGHT, AND THERS OTHER THINGS THAT SHE MAY KEPT FOR HER SAFETY AND HER CAREERS BUT THERES A LOT OF s$$t IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY, AND BELIEVE ME, IM A BEYONCE LOVER, BUT I DONT LIKE WHAT SHE TURNED INTO SINCE SHE’S WITH THAT GAY’Z
CACA, SHES JUST KIND A FEAMALE SATAN.

  30. joker says:

i agree, beyonce used to be everyone’s favorite lady, but i noticed she get closer, and closer, to nekid as the videos come. before you couldnt get beyonce to do nothing like dat, but she fallin off and she know it, so she using a differnt approach like teaming with lady ga ga to appeal to a wider mainstream. (like you know who kinda folks). no longer black, just about gettin dem bills paid now. go head girl. beyonce is very talented, i watch some shows just to see her perform, but not lately. too lady ga ga to me

  31. Don says:

I personally think Lady Gaga is a great singer and a music composer. Every piece she ever made has a stunning tune and rythmn to it. If you believe in change and trying new things then you can conveniently agree that she is pretty amazing.
About Gaga’s videos, I do agree that India Arie does not live under a rock, but she definitely cannot accept change. In the back of her mind I believe she still holds on to the idea of stereotypical image of feminity and masclinity!
Imagine instead of Gaga, a male singer enacts all what her video portrays, how would you guys respond to it??? Deep within I believe you wouldn’t even bother raising an argument against it. Well, if you accepted my above stated opinion then I would like to emphasize that her videos are only different, not socially irresponsible. You would think it is socially irresponsible only because it contradicts your preset notion on how women should act with regard to men, in other words, simply – gender inequality!!! I personally think that her videos would help enhance the idea of gender equality!!!

Thank You for taking the time to read my long comment!!!

  32. jiji says:

She not popular to you because she is an African American women who sings about things that are socially relevant!! She has numerous awards!! Do your research be for you start talking MARK!!! Plus how much stuff did you do even though your parents told you not!! GET A BRAIN!!
