M.I.A. Rihanna Diss – M.I.A.”Boyz” music video Vs Rihanna ”Rude Boy” music video,pick your side.When Rihanna dropped the music video for her latest single ‘Rude Boy’ everyone said that it was cool but it looked like something they saw before.In less than 24 hours after the clip was in circulation ,it became more or less official that Rihanna stole the concept from the clip ”Boyz” off M.I.A.’s last album ”Kala.” But rapidly Melina Matsoukas, the director of RiRi’s clip denied the story telling MTV:
“I mean, you know that the video lends from a lot of Rasta culture and ’80s Atari vibe and that’s what we went with, too.And then afterward I was like, ‘Oh, this sucks. They tore down my video.’ And her video’s great too. It definitely wasn’t trying to rip anybody off at all — it was just our approach and the animation stuff, it had a similar vibe. We’ve seen that before with Grace Jones and Andy Warhol, so I don’t know if anybody can lay claim to anything. We’re all inspired by similar elements and it came together in that way.”
The man behind”Boyz” ,Diplo weighed in the controversy in an interview with MTV also where he said:
“I downloaded Rihanna’s album as soon as it came out because I was interested in seeing the pop world’s take on dub-step [musical style], because that’s what they were supposed to do.It was pretty weak except for ‘Rude Boy,’ which is one of my favorite songs of the year thus far. I’m glad it came out as a single, but when I saw the video I was like, ‘This is a total rip-off of M.I.A.’s “Boyz” video, with a little bit of Santigold as well.’ But it’s cool because she looks beautiful in the video. I just thought it was funny.”
But things really got heated last night when M.I.A. used her Twitter page to slightly attack the “Umbrella” singer.M.I.A. re-tweeted:

I think peoples judgements are influenced by the different songs when judging the vids. Maybe try watch it with no music. Rihannah’s vid and MIA’s vid show different personas but they are based on the same style. If basing your video on a style (which is owned by no one) isn’t a crime then its not copying. Both vids hold their own.
To all the people that say that MIA’s video was “cheap” or “thrown together”. You have to understand that she doesn’t have the million dollar MACHINE that is behind Rihanna. MIA had a fraction of the budget Rihanna did. What she DID have was the BALLS to put her video out YEARS before Rihanna did. You have to give MIA credit for having some courage and not following anyone, and don’t hold her small budget against her.

To be honest, they’re both entertaining videos. But you must admit, the concept was truly stolen from M.I.A’s video. It’s not about the quality of the video or whose video you think was BETTER, it’s what went on in the video.
M.I.A’s videos have pretty much always been like that for the most part. Whoever directs them has a very creative mind to match M.I.A’s outwordly creative lyrics.
At the same time Rihanna’s videos change. One minute they want her to be with her roots, the next they want her to lose the accent and twirl around an umbrella.
Either way… watch the clips, it’s not about the quality… but the concept in M.I.A’s video is what is viewed in Rihanna’s video. Point Blank… the concept was stolen. Moving on…

We all live in the same world so are bound to attract similar influences. The video making process is complex, you have to brainstorm to the director the feeling you want to provoke, the style, sometimes you have to refer to what’s out there as an example.

Really I think, most of these comments are a bunch of crap. You really have to give them BOTH a chance, I love M.I.A.’s music and some of Rihanna’s. But most of Rihanna’s songs are sad. And almost all of M.I.A.’s music is Happy-party-go-dance. I have my own negative opinions on them both and they are both very sucessful. And yeah Rihanna’s vid. does look quite similar to M.I.A.’s sh*t but hey? Is that stopping me from watching it? (pause).

Sure, there are certain elements that are similar. Should MIA be up in beef about it? I don’t think so: Even if Matsoukas directly borrowed some of the elements, such as the animation, the new video has a different approach and context that I think it transforms into a totally different personality as a separate song. I hardly would say it is a ‘rip-off.’ Plus, I’d be interested to know how much borrowing MIA has done for her music. Unless she’s a total originalist I don’t think she can make a heavy stab at Rihanna’s video.
