  1. Mandi says:

Way to ruin one of the greatest songs of all time by frying it in grease and eating it with a side of grits.

    • Regina says:

what an idiot u are Mandi!!

    • Fair Critic says:

      Whatever, that was awesome!!

    • Ursula says:

Mary did an outstanding job to a very ordinary and utterly blah song…I enjoyed it -Unlike the comment done by MANDI THE RACIST C*&T

    • Keith says:

Study the history of American popular music before you make such comments. Your interpretation of Mary J. Blige’s cover of a song written by an English band is actually quite appropriate. English musicians of the 60′s and 70′s idolized African American musicians and did their best to emulate their music, resulting in very good imitation that lacked the very ingredients that you complain about. The grease, grits, and poverty is at the heart of American blues, country, rock and roll and jazz music. There is probably a hidden song among the classics of blues artists such as Robert Johnson or Muddy Waters that is the inspiration for “Stairway to Heaven.” For example, Eric Clapton and The Cream’s version of “Crossroads” is a cover of a Robert Johnson song minus the grease and grits. Both are great performances, just different interpretations. I’m sure Jimmy Page and Robert Plant will cry all the way to the bank when they deposit those royalty checks.

    • Cris says:

IT WAS A GREAT PERFORMANCE……LOVED IT!!!!!!

    • Wilma says:

You can say that again…She Blows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Adam says:

Mandi,I couldn’t have said it better! What was that?

  2. John says:

    Steve Vai rocks!

  3. Phil says:

I see it as a celebrity jam not intended to replace the original, but certainly a nod of respect. The only thing that bothered me was Fox apprently thought the typical AI viewer would have been frightened by a close-up of Steve Vai’s face.

  4. kory says:

I liked it. I am a big Led Zep fan too. I love that she is versatile. She did a song with U2 called One and did a fantastic job. Gosh she looked great too. That girl is a soulful rocker. Rock on Mary J.

  5. lala says:

I have never seen such a butchered job on one of the GREATEST SONGS ever written.
Mary Blige is an awesome musician….but not for that song!
The band was good (Orianthi ROCKS )…but that performance was really hard to watch.
I bet Robert Plant and Jimmy Paige were very disappointed…I know I was.

  6. LaTara Ham-Ying says:

That sounds a bit racist to me. Why is it so bad?

  7. Garbage Man says:

That is truly the worst version of this song ever done. She needs to be whipped for doing that. Agreed Mandi, they obliterated a wonderful thing.

  8. Anthony says:

    Mandi,

Thank you for the comment. Now go back to your teabag rally.

  9. Jessi says:

Seriously are you kidding me? Mary J. doesn’t even know half the words and they make every solo look like Orianthi is playing it when she is obviously NOT.

  10. Mike says:

Please don’t insult fried food and grits like this :)

  11. Carmen says:

I can’t believe what I just read… Who ever u are.. Mandi… It’s fine to have your own opinion of the performance but you have taken it a step to far! This just reminds me of how ignorance still rules the mind of many.. many idiots..like ur self! MJB and the rest of the band were great!

  12. Bronwyn says:

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little

You ever came up with the idea to do this should be shot

  13. Steve C says:

It sucked. I still don’t get why Mary J Blige is a star. Weak presence, weak voice. Fronting some great musicians last night. Bad karaoke. Just bad.

  14. Jeff W says:

Initaially I was excited that Mary J. might attempt such a demanding cover. Robert Plant is not to be covered..period. She didn’t to hit the highs, no particular stretch that I heard, just a soulful cover of a song that still should never be covered. I like Mary J. but this one was a shot at the moon the hit the neighbors house. Bad!

  15. Herb Arnold says:

I was captivated by Mary J Blige and her “Stairway to Heaven” – and what great guitar and drum performances. Robert Plant’s vocal with Led Zep. still were better, but this was very entertaining. And good job Randy Jackson- getting in there. Love it!

  16. Kevin says:

Absolutely horrid performance, utterly shameful take on a classic rock song, It was entirely off-key, forgotten words, How did they get Zep’s permission to do allow them to destroy their song

  17. What The F*** says:

The musicians were fine but the vocals really sucked!!! No emotion, no feeling, no heart. Robert Plant once again proves that this song should just be left alone. You can’t redo perfection.

  18. mici says:

She was great and Travis Barker was dead on also! What should she grill up franks and smash a beer can on her head… would that be to your fancy?

  19. Jules says:

I have to agree that Mary’s version totally sucked. Poor Robert Plant must feel like Stevie Nicks did when Taylor Swift butchered her song, Rhiannon. At least Robert wasn’t personally there to be a part of it. GAG!!! Mary couldn’t even carry a tune, let alone sustain a note for any measurable duration. She sounded winded, like she was smoking or hitting on a crack pipe too much. It was painful to watch and to listen to. OMG. Also, she would have been ELIMINATED from AI if she were a contestant since she either forgot or changed the original Stairway lyrics all together. Seeing Randy Jackson “playing” guitar was pathetic too, and a joke. I could have done that, stand there and strum, “dog.” To me, both Mary and Randy are overrated and over-paid. I just don’t see the supposed “talent” in either of them, and it has nothing to do with race, tea bags, or douche bags. Mary looked scary and skanky onstage. YIKES.

  20. drmrgrrrl says:

Travis Barker rocked the house as always. Mary J. was soulful and great, as usual. The rest played it too, and it was enjoyable and moving and good for what they were doing, respecting one of the all time greatest bands and songs.

  21. djuv says:

You kids are crazy. She didn’t miss any of the lyrics and she did as good a job as anyone that covers any classic tune has done. I don’t understand the need of an artist to produce a near replica of an original song. If you want to pay homage, make it your own and do something the original artist didn’t. And as far as all the ridiculous comments…it just shows your IQ level to the world and makes you look like a moron. If you didn’t like it, that’s your prerogative. But please have the sense to know what you are talking about before posting such nonsense. Mary J. Blige is an icon for a reason. Just cause you don’t know her history doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve what she has accomplished. Educate yourselves please…so there will ACTUALLY be some hope for the future of our species…

  22. Bush says:

    Mary J. Blige sucks !

  23. That was crap says:

Stay away from Led Zeppelin, Mary J. Blige and Orianthi. Please. The vocals sucked and the solo made me want to burn my ears.

And before anyone screams “Omg racism”, it’s NOT a RACIAL ISSUE. They ruined the song. If she was white, it would make no difference.

  24. Amy says:

Stairway to Heaven was awesome! Travis Barker ROCKED the drum kit. Mary J really sold it with her strong vocals. The absolute best guitarist in the world did not get much recog. Steve VAI is the best man for the job and rocked it out! Orianthi can definitely play guitar with the big boys. Randy Jackson can play the bass, I give him props dude. Great performance of the NIGHT for Idol Gives Back!

  25. Amy says:

Hey my little music fans. If u don’t know who Steve Vai is, you really must google him on utube or go to his website. Been seeing him perform for years and always gives a jaw dropping performance. Rock guitarist extroadinare!

  26. matt says:

i didn’t like it either. according to some comments here i guess that makes me a racist. i don’t care who sang the song, who played the song, who liked the song, or anything else. the fact that i didn’t like this ( or most other ) remakes of songs means that i’m a racist and i don’t deserve to breathe the same air as the rest of the enlightened world. my bottom line – the song sucked. now that i got that off my chest, i guess it’s back to my clan meeting.

  27. Cindy says:

I thought it was done beautifully, yes it wasn’t the original band, but I thought it was awesome to here that song done and by great musicians, and I am from the 70s generation and it brought back many memories! They were great!

  28. stantheman says:

mjb is boring now…she need to go somewhere

  29. LZfan says:

the biggest moron is on the drums vai and orianthi rock though
