Lucifer? Really? My God. She’s singing about how afraid she was, about how much pain she was in. It’s not “the devil” or “evil” or whatever. It’s an expression of her emotions, which I’m sure are troubling and complex and something she wanted to express.
Music isn’t all about love and bubbles, it’s about self expression… and people do experience negative emotions. She has a right to express those negative emotions. She just chose to do it in a constructive outlet–this song–instead of actually harming herself.

I Personally Like this song. I think it’s a message to all wommen or men out there in an abusive relationship. Wheather the relationship is verbally, physically or mentally abusive, if uou stay, you are playing russian roulette with your life. There have been so many stories in the news over the yrs about women who’s boyfirend have killed them or attemted to do so. These women were in abusive relationships and eventualy got to the one bullet in the barrell of the gun. I think the low lying messgae here is to get out while you can or eventually the relationship will blow up in your face. It´s incredible how much thought people put into a song. Of course one will attempt to analyze it, but she did not write the song, nor does the meaning of the lyrics necessarily has to relate to how she feels. Songwriters are poets, and most of the time a metaphor surfaces while they are listening to an instrumental. When they get a topic – they write a song. This song could have been recorded by Beyoncé, or Britney, and then everybody would go about analyzing how the song reflects their inner world. You have to remember that artists are also actors who perform. Of course the ideal situation would be that all artists today would write their songs on their own, but Rihanna is just not one of them.

Things don’t always have to have a hidden meaning. I think this song is about domestic violence and it’s not as pretty or romantic when you think of it like that. Domestic violence is more than getting thrown around and hit, it’s about control. The man shows his control by getting the girl to think she’s got to play a deadly game to prove she loves him. It’s sad really and I hope we don’t have kids doing this sort of thing as a show of “love”. Rhianna does have a beautiful voice in it, just wish the theme wasn’t so dark.

I think this song should be banned from the radio stations. My son is 13 years old and we dont play that kind of music in the car or at home but he rides the bus to school and we have no control over what kids hear away from home. The song is not about suicide. If one would truly listen to the lyrics you would understand that the song is about love and relationships (and taking chances on it) as many people have stated. I think Ne-Yo did a great job with the song and definitely took a risk with the lyrics.
Now for the listeners who only hear the song being about suicide and fear for the younger audience, then that’s when parenting comes into play (absolutely no pun intended). Air waves choose what they want to play, but it’s the parents’ jobs to explain to their children right or wrong/do’s and don’ts if they allow their children to listen to any genre of music. Daughter has talked of suicide and is playing this song over and over again… why would someone who is supposed to be a role model be so willing to put out lyrics that could influence teens to do something so negative? I saw the interview w/Diane Sawyer and how hard it was for her to record this album. She would run out of the studio in tears not able to finish the song. But she always came back and the end result was a great song, that I’m sure will win many music awards. Well I just heard this song, and read the remarks from some. Too sum this up, some are right that this song would not directly cause a person to commit suicide, but to others it could be the seed to lay the thought and it’s this thought of dispar loss and hopelessness that will cause a final end. Suicide is a permament solution to a nomally temporary problem and I do believe that the sounds and lyrics can be enough to push one over the edge by glamorising the feelings and the event. Restricted or not our children will be listening and dancing to it, and a few will possibly take the challenge and play the game of russian roulette as there’s never a winner all will lose eventualy…. People take chances for their own reasons, and in doing so, they risk sacrifice. Rihanna tries to prove how important this “something” is to her by making the sacrifice her life. We got a call from school today bcse our child was wondering what it would be like to play this game…and how cool it would be to win. Can you imagine!!! Sorry Rhianna, Your voice is wonderful, music great, bought the album for Russian roulette song but I think it should be boycotted!!!!! It romantisizes suicide for young people inspiring them to do as you sing in your song. Not positive. There should have been other lyrics to go with that great music. Too bad, too late. And what’s the worse is the sound of the gun going off at the end. Too many young people are comitting suicide without realizing it’s an irrevocable decisions. I’ve seen it around me – two of my children have tried it without succeeding (THANK GOD!) Other young people close to me have succeeded and I’ve seen the pain of their friends and families. I understand where you’re coming from but just because other bands romanticize suicide, it still is sending a negative message. I certainly doubt that very many adolescents have ever heard the word metaphorical and if they have, 95% don’t know what it means. Still, I remain firm in the conviction that the words as well as the video (playing the russian roulette game with the gun, the sound of the shot in the end knowing she dies) is conveying a very dangerous message.
Except Rihanna doesn’t die. The guy does.. If you didn’t notice she’s the one singing about the incident and she’s in that room because she survived that. It’s a bad message I agree but its a really great moving song. And metaphorical is something they start teaching children in grade 3 or 4 these days its an important thing in life today because of songs like Russian Roulette. The lyrics do encourage suicide but I don’t think Rhianna, at her young age didn’t realize their impact. It is intense,incredible music. However, the following portions of the song are NOT talking about love but definately someone daring another to take their life, coercing them, pushing them to muster up the courage (when actually they’re having second thoughts), the inability of teens to stand up to their peers and say NO. The gun, pulling the trigger, punishing those around her for her pain by not asking for help or saying goodbye; that is most definately a seriously dangerous message to convey to confused, hurt and desperate young people… Read again:

I think this is DEFINITELY all up to interpretation. I mean, I suppose I understand where you’re coming if you look at the lyrics in a completely blunt and straight forward manner, but really, how many songs have 0 room for interpretation?

I know that I have to do it in order to get what I want, and I’m willing to do it. I’ll bite the bullet (again, began as a suicide reference, but when somebody tells one to “bite the bullet” they don’t mean “Go home and shoot yourself in the mouth” correct?) take that chance, and take the risk that I could be hurt, in order to get so much more than I could imagine. So I need to do it before I can think about it, because if you think, you miss your chance, and what are you left with?

MY life will seem perfect, I’ll put on the smile and fake happy, until I’m no longer myself. By the time everyone realizes this, I’ll be long gone. Nobody will get the chance to say goodbye to who I used to be, or to try and stop me or save me. Because everything will change so quickly.

I understand where you are coming from, if you look at the lyrics and take them at face value. But I hope I helped to show that not everybody will interpret this song in the same way. I think people take songs in the way that helps them the most. In being romantic, I can take this song and make it completely about love. Somebody who is suicidal may choose to focus on the romantic views of the glory of suicide, and yet they may look more on the “Know that I must must pass this test” as a point that their trials are simply tests that they need to get through. They may look at the “And then I get a scary thought, That he’s here means he’s never lost” and see it as a challenge. People who go through these low points usually lose. So I’m going to be the one to win. I’M going to be the one who will make this ever triumphant competitor, fail.

I think it’s important to be worried about teenage suicide, and issues that are similar, yet at the same time, we need to keep in mind that not everybody views the song the same way, I doubt that many artists write songs in the hopes that they’ll cause mass suicides amongst depressed teens. And even the strange bands that bluntly seem to romanticize suicide, I again doubt that their intention is to kill of the general public of depressed teens. I’m sure they mean the focus to be more on the following, or preceding lines of the song, which talk about the aftermath, or how they can get through it, etc.etc.etc.
I know I personally don’t write often, but when I do I’ve written lines such as

I’m definitely not suicidal, nor have I ever been. And yet if you focus on that part of the poem, your thoughts may be that I’m romanticizing suicide. Whereas the focus of the poem as intended by myself, would be on the following lines of

This song is NOT ABOUT SUICIDE!!!! This song has to deal with love and i’m glad that someone else see’s it. Yes the lyrics sound like its about death and suicide but read in between the lines… “If you play, you play for keeps” of course many people are willing to do anything to find love and once they find it they wanna keep it. So they are playing for keeps. A teacher, guidance councelor, a clergy person (if you are religious or even not…), an aunt, uncle, godparent, etc.

My little sister killed herself by way of pulling the trigger May of 2009. (had nothing to do with this song) I have been listening to this song, really listening to it in the car on the way to work these last few mornings. At first, I really didn’t think anything about it. Then I would repeat it and listen to it again and again. The more I listened to it, the more it broke my heart. Then the next morning I listened to it again over and over and was thinking (why do I keep doing this because all it does is upset me and make me think of my sister). Just so hard because I can’t make myself understand why she did that, why she would ever do that to herself or her kids no matter how hard I try I can’t make sense of it. I’m sure I never will. So I came to my office this morning and looked up the lyrics to the song. I read it, I was still not sure what I really thought of it. Then I started reading everyone’s comments. I don’t think she (Rihanna) would have put this song out to intentionally try to sway anyone into killing themselves, or to play russian roulette. After reading Madison2084′s comments (good job), it does make sense and I can see the meaning of it. However, not everyone will respond or take the same meaning of this song as everyone. For me, it’s painfull to hear the song, as beautiful as her voice is and taking it for the meaning of a relationship, it’s hard. I won’t say I will never listen to it again, but it is a sad one for me and I don’t think there will ever come a time that I could ever listen to the song without thinking of my little sister. I must say, I totally agree with your point of view! Songs and lyrics such as these should not be taken lightly. I am a person who generally reads deep into the meaning of the lyrics in a song and personally, I think Rihanna is talking about a deeper meaning than suicide, more like selling her soul to the devil!! This “he” that she sings about sounds like he’s in charge and running the show, forcing her to perform this ritual.

Ok I’m a seventeen year old girl that attempted to commit suicide multiple times. And songlyrics have nothing to do with it. What people need to realize is that just because someone sings a damn song doesn’t mean that listeners have to follow the lyrics! It’s a conscious decision. A song is a song. People choose who they allow to influence their lives with the exception of the parents/guardians. No one is a slave to music and no one is a puppet. My question is how can you criticize a great song that really is describing a game that people play?
And before anyone says that “I’m young and don’t know what I’m talking about”. Let me point out that at age 13 I lost my best friend to a game of russian roulette that she was playing because she was abused in her home. She knew the consequences (as are also illustrated in the song)All you can do is learn not to make stupid mistakes. The song doesn’t affect me because I learned from her mistake. Basically if you don’t like it censor it. but don’t cause issues for people who just enjoy music for what it is instead of taking it personally.

I actually was very touched by the song tone until I listened to the lyrics. Most YOUNG people take things very literally. They aren’t going to see the undertones of love because they haven’t had enough experience in that arena to understand, but they WILL understand the “game” that often ends up in death. More people around the world are having these “parties” where this game is played and the song romanticizes it. Whether it was intentional or not, and I am sure she wouldn’t be THAT irresponsible, young people are not going to look past it to see the love song in the lyrics. And what is worse, it demonstrates the power that peers have on young people. Again, intentions of the song don’t matter! People don’t look past it.
